Moscow Metro equipped 45 stations with sound beacons to allow visually impaired or blind people to locate the entrance.
The project was implemented with the participation of the All-Russian Society of the Blind that helped determine the most suitable location of the beacons: they have been installed at entrances that are close to social facilities.
Moscow’s Department of Transport cites examples of London, Shanghai and Boston where the beacons are used to improve transport experience for visually impaired passengers. According to the authority, the devices automatically change the volume so that passengers can find the entrance even during the busiest hours.
Moscow Metro is actively developing accessibility for all groups of passengers. Earlier, the network had reported equipping its ticket offices with special devices for passengers who are hard of hearing.
In addition, the Passenger Mobility Center operates in the metro, providing low-mobility passengers with support on the infrastructure of the metro, MCC and MCD.
Since November 2020, the Center has been operating on trams and buses as well. More than 1 million passengers have already used the service.
