The IJmuiden sea lock, the largest of its kind in the world, was officially put into operation on Wednesday, 26 January 2022 at a ceremony during which the King of the Netherlands Willem Alexander officially opened the lock’s inner door.
With the lock now in full operation, maritime access to the TEN-T network at Amsterdam will be greatly improved, with an estimated growth in throughput from the current limit of 95 million tonnes to 125 million tonnes per year. Larger vessels will be able to enter the North Sea Canal Area and reach the Port of Amsterdam, thus improving efficiency and contributing to sustainability.
Preparatory activities for the final build of this lock were co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility for transport programme with over EUR 11 million.
